Halloween - American Style

Thursday, November 1, 2018

MadHatter has loved Halloween since before she can remember. (I was going to say before she could even walk door-to-door to trick or treat, but as the overachiever she is, she could walk by her 1st Halloween).  It has ranked above her birthday, Easter and even Christmas each and every year.   This year, she was so excited to be back in the U.S. to celebrate because even though it is not where Halloween started, it is where they have perfected Trick-or-Treating.

We had only been able to Trick or Treat in the US three times before we became expats.  Which means the girls were so little they do not ever remember doing it.  They look back at the pictures and know they had a good time (mostly because they are smiling and I tell them the stories behind the photos), but they have no real memories of actually going door to door and collecting candy.  And then we became expats in countries that don't celebrate Halloween at all.  Trick or Treating was something they did at school from the trunk of one car to the trunk of the next if they were lucky - from door to door that had no one home if they were not so fortunate.  And don't get me started on the fact that my girls had to pick their costumes in June or July while we were still in the US for vacation because finding they where we lived was almost impossible in October.  Still, MadHatter could never contain her excitement for the celebrations she did get to participate in.  (What about Stinkerbell you ask?  She just loves it the normal amount, like any other kids her age).

This year the girls picked out their costumes in early October (which is the usual way to do it).  MadHatter decided to be a lumberjack brought on by her trip to Alaska this summer.  Stinkerbell chose to be Addison, the Cheerleader from her new favorite Disney movie, Zombies.  We got a chance to try the costumes out before the big night when our local park hosted a Trunk or Treat.

They had a pumpkin patch where you could pick your pumpkin...

and then decorate it.

They had toilet paper bowling...

And board breaking...

And lots of businesses with decorated trunks and pumpkins giving out candy.

And now that we had our own house, we got into the spirit in the front yard...

And then it was finally here - Halloween night!  MadHatter had been invited by a friend from her class to go with her and another friend around the neighborhood.  She was beyond herself with excitement.  I, on the other hand, was a bit sad that we would not all be going together but I knew she needed to go with friends and not her mom.  But I did make them snap a picture first...

Nana and Grampa were in town helping us get a few things done around the house so we left Grampa in charge of the candy bowl and Nana and I took Stinkerbell around the block.  Or should I say we tried to keep up with her?  She is fast when candy is involved!

This house had invited the entire neighborhood over for drinks, hot dogs and snow cones...

We finally met up with MadHatter again at home but not before both of them had bags FULL of candy (which we will probably still have at Easter!)  Did she have a good time?  Was it everything she had hoped Trick or Treating would be?  I don't really know because this is what greeted me...

I think this is her version of "Stick a fork in me, I'm done!"
