I came running because this is not something you hear every day. And sure enough, there were two oversized green, scaly creatures sunning themselves on our back deck. I was a little peeved because I hadn't even had the time to sit on my back deck and soak up the sun quite yet and here they were enjoying all of my hard work. I was also a little freaked out because, let's be honest, animals without fur are not my idea of cute.
After ascertaining that they were not in fact dragons, just rather large iguanas, I was in a quandary as what to do with them. Having never encountered iguanas up close before I did not know what needed to be done. Did I just let them stay and leave when they felt like it? Did I go out and shoo them off? If yes, how did one shoo away an iguana? Did they bite, spit, swat with that 4-foot tail? I really was new to all of this.
So, what did I do? I held an impromptu photo shoot because the colors they sport really are beautiful and those scales! They posed lazily for me (I think they enjoyed the attention). And then I shooed them away...
I have learned that living in Florida means crazy creatures are just a part of life. If your house almost literally backs up to the Everglades you can count on the creatures being big, exotic and plentiful. If you also have a lake out back, expect visitors on a regular basis. Just don't expect me to leave out snacks.
