Bits and Bobs

Just some Random January happenings...

The post office finds it hard to deliver Christmas cards without the full address.  My question though - doesn't everyone know the Gavito's?

Scared the dickens out of me when I saw this guy just next to me in a Walgreens garbage can.  I did not stop to say hello (just snap the pic)

So fantastic to see a friendly face from Munich visiting!

MadHatter has started Track season.  Which means a LOT of running - for both of us (though mine is in the car).

How did I get so lucky?  Another great visit with a good friend from Munich!  I think Florida is the place to be if you want to see expat friends.

Drying off after a swim.  Rough life.

I see you.  100 googly eyes to represent 100 days of school.

Thinking of painting the kitchen cabinets.  I'll let you know what I decide...If I can ever decide.

 Someone loves her haircut...

And has taken to sleeping on the blow up mattress in the guest room with MadHatter.  Spoiled rotten - the both of them.

A Rockin' Time

Saturday, January 26, 2019

This is what the outside temperature looked like when we arrived in Hollywood Studios on Monday.  I know that isn't very cold in the eyes of many but with the wind blowing and the sun barely making itself known, it was cold.  You'll just have to trust me.  But we had a mission and by golly, we were going to accomplish it.   How else would we know which land had our favorite roller coaster/ride?  So far we had ridden Space Mountain (in the dark!), Big Thunder Mountain and the Seven Dwarves Mine Train at the Magic Kingdom, Expedition Everest (backwards, in the dark) at the Animal Park, Mission SPACE (not a roller coaster but can make you queasy by pulling more G's than should be allowed) and Test Track at Epcot.  Now we just had to hit the Rockin' Roller Coaster at Hollywood Studios.  It has been on our list for a while now but with wait times that are usually over 2 hours, sometimes up to 3 or 4, we had just never managed it.  With the cold, it was keeping people home longer than normal so we lucked out and the line was only 45 minutes.  It was still a pretty windy and chilly 45 minutes but we played with some Snapchat filters while we killed time...

These two even snuggled!  Which if you know my girls is a rare sight indeed.

I thought this was fun.  Each of our names popped up on the screen as we came inside to the waiting area.  Must be those Magic Bands they are scanning constantly.  Finally, it was our turn.  What was our final verdict of Rockin' Roller Coaster?

 BEST! ROLLER COASTER!  EVER!
And I might have to agree with the girls here.  It was pretty incredible.  We will make sure to put that one on our FastPass list from now on.

One more FastPass to go - Hollywood Tower of Terror.  Now, MadHatter and I went on this one in November when we were in town with Nana and Grampa but Stinkerbell sat it out.  With just the three of us there this time she didn't have a choice.  Poor kid.  This one still terrifies her to no end and it left her in tears.  Perhaps that was her last time on that one and MadHatter and I will just have to suck it up and not ride unless we have someone to stay with Stinkerbell.

It was closing in on noon at this point and we really needed to be getting home.  Plus, it was not warming up much and we were tired so we called it a day and headed to the car.  I would say that was another successful trip to Disney under our belts.

 See you real soon, Mickey.

Around the World in One Day

Thursday, January 24, 2019

Our last full day at Disneyworld and we chose to spend it at Epcot.  As the girls have gotten older, it has become one of their favorites; mine too if truth be told.  Once again, we stumbled into a Festival celebration - this time the Festival of the Arts.  Which meant another scavenger hunt for the girls to complete.  This time we had to find the famous paintings in each land that Fidget (the purple dragon mascot of Epcot) had painted himself into.  But first, we needed to take care of getting MadHatters new ears monogrammed...

She is such a traditionalist.

Maps and stickers in hand, we set off in search of Fidget.

We didn't get far before we ran into the chalk artists that were finishing up their street drawings.  I love the detail they can get from painting with chalk sticks.

And then we got sidetracked by this GIANT paint by numbers canvas that had just been started.  Each person can get a small tub of paint and a brush and color in the corresponding squares.  They limit you to about 5 each, so everyone gets a chance.  We had gotten there early, so the canvas was almost entirely white still.  We had no idea what we were painting, but it wouldn't take long before it started looking like something...(see the end of the post for what it looked like when we left).

We were on the hunt again and headed toward the U.K.  We didn't have any idea what we were really looking for, or where but we just kept looking.  If you remember our hunt for Remy (click here to recap), we usually found him perched on the edge of a roof or near a rock outcropping.  But paintings wouldn't look quite right in either of those places, so we just had to think harder.  And then we stumbled upon the first one.  It was hidden in a shop window in a back courtyard behind one of the shops.  This was the first inkling that it was not going to be easy to find them all.  But at least now we knew what to look for.  Each of them would have a gold frame, they were roughly 24" x 36," and Fidget would be painted inside somehow.

We had to take a break because we had a FastPass for Test Track and it was getting to be close.  We had never been before, and we didn't want to miss it, so we worked our way over to the queue.  We did stop to take a quick snap with Venelope and Ralph though.

Verdict - thumbs up all around!

But we didn't have time to discuss it much because we were running super late for our lunch reservation at the Teppan grill.  All the way over in Japan.  Which was literally across the World Showcase.  I have never seen the girls move so fast through a crowd.

We found our painting while we were there and then popped over to China to see that one also...

And then we started putting ourselves in the paintings instead of merely looking for them.

As Frida Kahlo

Crossing the Delaware River with Washington

As the Scream and American Gothic

And then it was back to painting hunts (with a ride or two in between).  Finally, just as the sun was setting and it was getting even cooler than it already was, we found our final painting.  Heading back to the store to turn our cards in for our prize, we passed by the mural we had helped paint just a few hours earlier.  Remember how I told you it was pretty much a white canvas when we started.  Well look at it only 7 hours later (and keep in mind that thing is HUGE).

It's a space theme.  With Fidget, of course.

In keeping with the space theme, we stood on the landing of the launch pad for the space shuttle.  How realistic is that 3D drawing?!?!

And we bid adieu to the giant golfball as Stinkerbell calls it.

We were tired and wind whipped and hungry.  But we wouldn't trade it for the world.  We had the best day together at Epcot!

Acting like Animals

Tuesday, January 22, 2019

Disney Day 2.  We had an entire day at the Wild Animal Park ahead of us.  We have been a few times but had never really spent the entire day here.  I was a bit apprehensive because there aren't as many thrill rides but I needn't have worried.  As soon as we walked into the park (and had our picture taken)...

We stumbled onto something we had missed each time we had been previously - the Wilderness Explorers.  As we learned, you can follow in the footsteps of Russel from the movie UP! and earn 25 different "badges" throughout the park by finding animals, learning wilderness skills or learning fun facts.  I suddenly wasn't so worried about the girls missing a day of school.  Stinkerbell started us off and kept it going throughout the entire day.  Naturally, we didn't stop until we had collected all of the stickers and badges we could (some attractions were closed).  And we all learned LOADS of new information and saw a lot of animals on our adventures (some of them were dressed in costume).

We got up close and personal with some of the birds too...

and now in slow mo...

We booked a special lunch for MadHatter's birthday celebration.  She chose the Rainforest Cafe and even allowed us to sing Happy Birthday!

We had a great day just enjoying the sun (it was our warmest, sunniest day yet) and each others company.  We did have to leave a bit before closing since we had a pesky appointment at Apple to see about my dead phone (pictures here are courtesy of MadHatters device).  Which turned out to be a waste of time since they didn't even have my replacement phone in stock.  But it didn't diminish our fun and we still had tomorrow (and 1/2 of Monday).
